Synopsis (goodreads):

Darrow is a Red, a member of the lowest caste in the color-coded society of the future. Like his fellow Reds, he works all day, believing that he and his people are making the surface of Mars livable for future generations.

Yet he spends his life willingly, knowing that his blood and sweat will one day result in a better world for his children.

But Darrow and his kind have been betrayed. Soon he discovers that humanity already reached the surface generations ago. Vast cities and sprawling parks spread across the planet. Darrow—and Reds like him—are nothing more than slaves to a decadent ruling class.

Inspired by a longing for justice, and driven by the memory of lost love, Darrow sacrifices everything to infiltrate the legendary Institute, a proving ground for the dominant Gold caste, where the next generation of humanity’s overlords struggle for power. He will be forced to compete for his life and the very future of civilization against the best and most brutal of Society’s ruling class. There, he will stop at nothing to bring down his enemies… even if it means he has to become one of them to do so.

Review:

“I live for the dream that my children will be born free”, she says. “That they will be what they like. That they will own the land their father gave them.”
“I live for you,” I say sadly.
Eo kisses my cheek. “Then you must live for more.”

I’m gonna say it, yes, I bloodydamn loved this book! I have no words to describe how freaking awesome this book is, I just loved it, all the action, the politics, the blood, the gore and the betrayal, it was amazing, this book has definitely become one of my all-time favorites.

I’m mad I didn’t pick this up sooner, but I really blew through dystopian books a few years ago and kinda didn’t want to dive back into that genre, but this book is so much more, it’s like all my favorite dystopian and sci-fi books came together and made one epic baby.

Of course at first I had to get used to the writing style because Pierce Brown wrote this book in a very unique/different style than I’m used to but that’s just what made this book stand out even more for me.

This book is so fast-paced; I can’t believe so much can be packed into 382 pages (hardcover), the quick world building just makes you immediately get sucked into this brutal world. Plus, this is such an emotionally involving book, I’m not ashamed to say I cried not even half-way through the book, I cringed at all the betrayal and bloodshed, cheered ever victory, sighed at every defeat.

Darrow is a smart and very reckless character that I really liked. I loved reading how he developed as a character, reading how ruthless he had to become to achieve his goals and how he dealt with the consequences of his actions. I’m just blown away. I can barely even write a proper review.

The only negative thing I have to say is that the ending felt a little rushed (of course I say that because I wanted more) but everything just ended so quickly, I really cannot wait to pick up Golden Son and find out what happens next!

I know ‘most everyone has read this but if you haven’t I really recommend it because it is freaking awesome, I don’t know how many times I said that but I’ve got no other words to describe this book.

May.
